Giving Christmas to Your Family

Melvin M Newland, Minister at Central Christian, Brownsville, TX, preached a sermon on this topic and I’d like to share a little of it with you.

“It’s Christmas time, & Lucy comes in where Charlie Brown is standing & says, Merry Christmas Charlie Brown. Tis the season of peace on earth & & good will toward men. Therefore, I suggest we forget all our differences & love one another.”

“Charlie Brown, whose face lights up at this, says, that’s wonderful, Lucy. I’m so glad you said that. But tell me, do we have to love each other only at this season of the year? Why can’t we love each other all year long? Lucy retorts, what are you a fanatic or something?”

“If we really get serious about Christmas, it seems that we’re branded by the world as some kind of fanatic. Yet, Christmas is supposed to be a time of peace on earth, good will toward men.”

Yesterday, a man at Popeye’s was painting Christmas holly on the window and was real jolly and said, happy holidays, to which I replied MERRY CHRISTMAS. Many employees are afraid to say Merry Christmas, this is so sad. I see it on face book, I see it on cards, and I even refused to buy gift cards for Veterans this week with it on it. Of, course; they quickly came up with one without it.

Folks, the ole song says “Stand up stand up for Jesus, ye soldier’s of the cross, lift high his royal banner, you will not suffer loss.” A song I sing “This world is dying for the want of someone to tell them of our Savior’s Matchless love…”

What greater time than Christmas to share the love of Jesus when everyone is in a good mood, smiling and sharing. We have the gift of Christ in our heart, this gift is for anyone that will call upon the name of Jesus, repent, confess their sins, and receive Christ.

Rejoice with the angels when someone receives the Lord, what greater joy can one have than to win a soul for Jesus.

REMEMBER
“If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1John 1:9

NOTHING EARTH SHATTERING #78012042012

NOTHING EARTH SHATTERING

Nothing earth shattering, nothing to gain the headlines, just another minister of the gospel leaves this world to put on a new robe and crown. Then tonight as we finish a Pastor’s Christmas meal with our State Bishop, another minister lands in the hospital with heart problems. Ministers come and go but while here they proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Have you heeded their cry as they pour their heart out about Jesus and his love for you? Jesus gave his life that you might hope of eternal life and these ministers give their lives fulfilling the commission of Jesus to proclaim Jesus to you and me.

My heart has been heavy thinking about these men and so many others like them that give and give and give with the sole desire to see us learn more about Jesus so we can withstand the evil days in which we live.

Have you taken time to thank these ministers for the love they give to you? One minister said to me tonight you know I miss our buddy and I knew exactly which minister he was talking about because he mentored me too. I’m glad I let him know how much I loved him and find myself desiring to be able to touch people as he did in so many ways with his love for Jesus.

One may think I am depressed but rest assured I’m encouraged as I behold Christ and the labor he and these ministers put forth desiring to see me endure faithfully until the end.

Our State Bishop said tonight he was going to tell us when Christ would return. He said no man knows neither the day nor the hour. I can still hear an ole Bishop play his instrument and proclaim you better be ready to meet him in the air.

So, yes, we come and we go but the message is clear and remains to proclaim unto you JESUS IS COMING SOON.

God’s word was written to be studied, understood, and applied, and the book of Psalms lends itself most directly to application. We understand Psalms best when we “stand under” them and allow them to flow over us like a rain shower. We may turn to Psalms looking for something, but sooner or later we will meet Someone. As we read and memorize the psalms, we will gradually discover how much they are already part of us. They put into words our deepest hurts, longings, thoughts, and prayers. They gently push us toward being what God designed us to be people loving and living for him.

I used these thoughts on June 10, 1990 while pastoring Eastview COGOP. I took this outline from Tyndale’s Life Application Bible and find them still to be real and true today. Put it in your Bible, post it on your refrigerator, put it on your bulletin board but most of all post it in your heart and allow it to help you on your journey with Christ.
