"The Goats"

Have you ever thought about the people who will stand before the throne of God at Judgment? Scripture tells us that there will be "sheep and goats" (Matt 25:31-34, 41, and 46).

But, among the "goats," who will be there? I can think of 5 varieties of "goats."

  1. The "There is no God" goat. This one's pretty simple: "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned" (Mark 16:16). If that's not clear enough, 2nd Thessalonians 2:11 should add a little clarity: "...all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness."
  2. 2. The "I'm a good person" goat. This one's a little tougher. Consider the young man who came to Jesus in Mathew 19:16-30. He asked, "Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?"

Jesus answered, "...keep the commandments" (There are 613 in the Old Law). If you want to gain eternal life through your good works, you must keep all the commandments from birth until death. Only one man has ever done that - Jesus.

Jesus will say to many who did great works (but did not accept Him as Lord and Savior): "I never knew you... Away from me." (Matthew 7:22-24)

Like Israel, who pursued righteousness but did not attain it. Why not? Because they pursued it by works instead of by faith. They stumbled over the "stumbling stone" - Jesus. (Romans 9:31-33)

3. The "I know about Him but I don't accept Him" goat. They were told but didn't listen. It will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the Day of Judgment than for anyone who hears but does not listen (Matthew 10:14-16). These goats have seen the miracles; but, because they still refuse, their fate is sealed (Matthew 11:21-25). It would have been better if they had not heard (2nd Peter 2:21)

  1. The "He's not the only way" goat. Jesus was very clear when He said, "No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12) Either we believe that the bible is the Word of God or not. If it is, Jesus is the only way.

5. Finally, the "I know Him... I'm just not ready" goat. This is the saddest of all the goats. They know Him for Who He is... They believe he is the Living Son of God. They know he is the only way to salvation and eternal life; but, they're just not ready to ask Him into their hearts as their Lord and Savior. They're not yet ready to live their life for Him. Philip P. Bliss said it in song in 1871 and it’s still true today...

“Almost persuaded” now to believe;
“Almost persuaded” Christ to receive;
Seems now some soul to say,
“Go, Spirit, go Thy way,
Some more convenient day
On Thee I’ll call.”

“Almost persuaded,” come, come today;
“Almost persuaded,” turn not away;
Jesus invites you here,
Angels are ling’ring near,
Prayers rise from hearts so dear;
O wand’rer, come!

“Almost persuaded,” harvest is past!
“Almost persuaded,” doom comes at last!
“Almost” cannot avail;
“Almost” is but to fail!
Sad, sad, that bitter wail…
“Almost,” but lost!

Brothers and sisters, time is short. Don't be a goat. Your servant, Pastor RonU

Thank you Pastor Ron
